TEACHER MENTOR PROGRAM

Why we believe there is one definitive reason that sets the Boerne ISD apart from all others…

Our mentor program - it is like no other. The greatest issue that resonates among teachers today is the issue of support - what are you going to do to support me and help me to be successful? We listened and implemented the most innovative and comprehensive mentoring program in the State of Texas.

In 2004, we took two of our master teachers, one from the primary level and one from the secondary level, and asked them to be full-time mentors to our teaching faculty. These ladies were chosen for a variety of reasons - professionalism, achievement, compassion, grace, dignity, and most of all, a passion to help others.

Today, we are down to one mentor. She is mentor to both new and veteran faculty for as long as our faculty members serve the Boerne ISD. You may call on her at anytime during your career here. She is available to help in two areas - 1) classroom management, instruction, and discipline, and 2) personal counseling. She will help with any aspect of teaching including aiding and supporting the teacher when the teacher is dealing with difficult parents or students. The mentor will also help facilitate effective communications between the teachers and administration. She is also available to help the teachers when the teachers face difficult challenges in their personal lives. This aspect of the mentoring program is not mandatory as we have no intentions of prying into your personal lives. It is however part of our approach to support and treat the teacher as a "whole person". You are not just a number at the Boerne ISD.

A new teacher to our District will receive full training from the mentor at our new teacher orientation. She will prepare you thoroughly for our classrooms. She will make your transition as smooth as possible.

The response to our program has been overwhelming. Teachers appreciate the fact that they can receive personalized help in a non-threatening manner. Campus administrators are often prohibited by their schedules from being effective mentors and teachers often feel uncomfortable when an administrator attempts to do so.

We hope to have our mentor program expand as the District grows. We envision a mentor dedicated to our special education teachers. The opportunities to expand the program are endless.
