PUBLICE SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

NOTICE REGARDING SPECIAL EDUCATION AND RELATED SERVICES FOR PRIVATE SCHOOL CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES

Dual enrollment is an option for younger children aged 3 or 4. These children may be enrolled in private school and still be entitled to enroll part-time in public school and receive special education services included in his or her Individual Education Program (IEP) through the school year in which the child turns 5. As of June 30, 2001, dual enrollment for providing special education and related services is no longer available for children with disabilities 5 years of age and older who are enrolled in private schools (including religious and home schools).

If your child is 5 years of age or older, you may choose to enroll your child full time in your local Independent School District and receive all the special education services recommended by your child's Admission, Review and Dismissal/Individual Education Program (ARD/IEP) Committee. You may also choose to enroll your child in private school. The law does not require that services be provided to all children with disabilities voluntarily enrolled in private schools (including religious and home schools), or to every private school. All private/home school children with disabilities that reside in your local school district will be considered for participation in special education and related services, but there is no guarantee your child will receive these services.

Contact Boerne ISD's Special Education Director, DeNette Krawczynski, at 830-357-2098 if you would like more information about participation of private/home school children with disabilities in the school district's special education program.
