T3: Technology Top Ten

Want to know more about what's going in technology? Below is our Technology Top Ten (T3), which lists the top ten technology initiatives our team is working on.

10. Software Center

In October 2014, we launched the Software Center. The purpose was to present you with software packages that you could install and update yourself. Weren't aware this existed? Read more about it here.

9. GVTC Internet & Fiber Optic WAN Services

During the winter break, GVTC and Boerne ISD partnered to create an optimized and stable infrastructure across the district. Want to compare the before and after?

8. Wireless and Cabling Upgrades for Cibolo Creek and Fair Oaks Ranch

During the winter break, crews were hard at work installing Category 6 cabling throughout Cibolo Creek Elementary to support new wireless access points and future security initiatives. New Cisco wireless access points were also installed in every classroom for campus-wide coverage. This summer, Fair Oaks Ranch Elementary will receive the same upgrades campus wide.

7. Boerne High School Digital Signage

Have you been to BHS lately? If so, you may have noticed some new additions on the inside. In November 2014, 6 new 60" HD TVs were installed as a part of the digital signage initiative. Now students can stay in touch with campus events while walking through the hallways, when visiting the front office, and even while sitting in the cafeteria.

6. Making Customer Support a Priority

Customer Support has been a major initiative of ours. We have brought in new Customer Support staff, revamped the Customer Support Center, and streamlined our internal processes to better serve you. Take a few minutes and browse our TLC: Technology Learning Center for help, learn about computer security in the Security Center, visit the FAQ section if you have a question, or submit a Customer Service Request if you need a Specialist to assist you. Need assistance now? Call us for HELP (4357).

5. Office 365

This summer, our staff will be working hard to migrate your BISD email to the cloud. What's included with Office 365? You will now have a mailbox that is 5 times larger than your existing one. We will also begin moving the P drive to the cloud using Microsoft SharePoint. These are just a few of the features Office 365 provides. Check back for more information on this initiative.

4. Mobile Device Deployments

IT staff are working diligently to deploy 330 iPads and 689 laptops. That's over 1000 new student devices! A big thank you to Robert Green and Santiago Lopez for driving these initiatives. Want to keep track of the deployment schedule? Visit our Project Calendar for details.

3. Mobile Application Deployment

Throughout the school year, we have made great strides to improve the iPad application deployment and management of devices. To better support this initiative, a Network Specialist was hired to administer this project full time. In addition, we streamlined the app deployment process to operate more efficiently, allowing us to deploy mobile apps at a much more rapid pace.

2. A/V Refresh

Beginning Summer 2015, crews will begin installing and upgrading LCD projectors and Smart Boards across the district. Phase I will target the elementary campuses beginning with Fair Oaks Ranch Elementary, and Phase II will target the secondary campuses. Watch our project calendar for more information on this initiative.

1. Student Desktop Refresh

In January 2015 we began upgrading the student computers throughout the entire district, beginning with Cibolo Creek Elementary. Over 1200 new Dell computers were installed as a part of this initiative! The project was completed at the end of February and has been a huge success. Student and teacher feedback has been extremely positive.

Honorable Mentions

As much as we've accomplished, we didn't stop with 10 projects and initiatives. Here are other projects that we were tasked with this year.

- Data Center infrastructure upgrades and storage increase: We made great strides in upgrading our data center. We increased our server virtualization farm, added space to our storage network, and much more!

- New inventory and asset management system and processes: We purchased a new inventory system, and have begun the process to inventory all technology devices throughout the district.

- Advanced system monitoring and notification services: We now monitor all of our servers for usage and critical outages. We also monitor all campus connections and are notified immediately if an outage occurs.

- New Anti-virus software, patch management, and imaging systems: A new anti-virus system was implemented on all servers and clients throughout the district, we have a new security patch management system to automate patching clients, and we can image computers more efficiently that we could in the past.
